Located on the Gulf Coast, Houston is the largest Metro area in the United States by total area, covering 637.4 miles and the fifth largest by population with an estimated population of greater than 7 million.

The city of Houston is primarily situated in Harris County but does extend into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. The metro area stretches across 10 counties (Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller) and stretches from The Woodlands to Sugar Land and Galveston Island.

The city is named for General Sam Houston, the president of the Republic of Texas and the commander of the Army that defeated the Mexican army at the Battle of the San Jacinto. Houston is nicknamed the “Bayou City” and “Space City”, given its expansive bayou system and association with Johnson Space Center located in the Clear Lake area.

Houston is a major economic center and is home to 21 Fortune 500 companies, ranking fourth in the U.S. only behind New York City, Chicago and DFW. Houston is known for its leadership in the oil and gas industry and also boasts a world class Medical center and biomedical industry, a robust manufacturing industry, and a strong banking industry.

The Port of Houston is one of the largest ports in the U.S. and the largest on the Gulf Coast. Prominent companies headquartered in Houston include ConocoPhillips, Sysco, Halliburton, Centerpoint Energy, Group 1 Automotive, Waste Management, Occidental Petroleum, and Hewlett Packard.

    The town serves as the new headquarters for both Hewlett Packard and ExxonMobile — the 10th largest company in the nation. ExxonMobile already houses over 10,000 employees in their Spring campus, and the headquarters migration will bring even more.
